8 Essential File Management Skills Every Windows User Should Know

This is the next lesson in my series covering 50 useful Microsoft Windows skills every computer user should know.

Files are where your documents, pictures, videos, downloads, financial records, and other important information are stored. Learning how to manage those files properly can save time, prevent confusion, and reduce the risk of losing something important.

In the video that accompanies this post, I will demonstrate each of these file-management skills step by step so you can follow along on your own computer.

1. Create a New File or Folder

A folder is used to organize and store files, much like a filing cabinet or a folder in a desk drawer.

To create a new folder in Windows, open File Explorer, go to the location where you want the folder, right-click an empty area, select New, and then choose Folder.

Give the folder a name that clearly describes what you plan to store inside it.

For example:

  • Tax Documents

  • Family Photos

  • Medical Records

  • Work Files

  • Computer Backups

Using clear folder names makes your files much easier to find later.

You can also create new documents from many Windows programs by selecting File and then New.

2. Rename a File or Folder

A file name should help you understand what the file contains without having to open it.

To rename a file or folder, right-click it and select Rename. Type the new name and press Enter.

You can also select the item and press F2 on your keyboard.

Instead of using a vague name such as:

Document1

Use a more descriptive name such as:

2026 Household Budget

or:

John Smith Resume Final

Be careful not to remove or change the file extension at the end of a filename, such as .docx, .pdf, .jpg, or .xlsx. Changing the extension can prevent Windows from opening the file correctly.

3. Move a File

Moving a file changes its location without creating another copy.

For example, you may want to move a downloaded bank statement from your Downloads folder into a folder named Financial Records.

One way to move a file is to select it, press Ctrl+X, open the destination folder, and press Ctrl+V.

You can also drag a file from one folder into another.

After moving the file, check the new location to make sure it arrived where you intended.

4. Copy a File

Copying creates a second version of a file while leaving the original in place.

Select the file and press Ctrl+C. Open the folder or drive where you want the copy and press Ctrl+V.

Copying is useful when you want to:

  • Place a file on a USB drive

  • Keep a second copy in another folder

  • Send someone a copy while keeping the original

  • Create a working copy before making major changes

  • Copy pictures from a phone or camera

Remember that copying a file is not the same as moving it. After copying, the file exists in both locations.

5. Delete a File or Folder

Files you no longer need can take up storage space and make your computer harder to organize.

To delete a file, select it and press the Delete key, or right-click it and select Delete.

In most cases, Windows moves the deleted item to the Recycle Bin instead of permanently removing it immediately.

Before deleting a folder, open it and make sure it does not contain anything you still need.

Be especially careful when deleting multiple selected files. Windows will delete every item that is currently selected.

6. Restore a Deleted File

Accidentally deleting a file does not always mean it is gone forever.

Open the Recycle Bin from the Windows desktop. Locate the file or folder you want to recover, right-click it, and select Restore.

Windows will return the item to the location where it was stored before it was deleted.

Files may not appear in the Recycle Bin if they were:

  • Deleted from certain USB drives or network locations

  • Removed using Shift+Delete

  • Too large for the Recycle Bin

  • Deleted after the Recycle Bin was emptied

That is one reason regular backups are so important.

7. Search for a File

If you cannot remember where you saved a file, Windows can help you find it.

Open File Explorer and use the search box in the upper-right corner.

You can search using:

  • The full filename

  • Part of the filename

  • A word contained in the file

  • A file type such as PDF, JPG, or DOCX

  • The approximate date the file was created or modified

For example, entering:

budget

may find files named:

  • Household Budget

  • Monthly Budget

  • Budget Planning Notes

Using clear and descriptive filenames makes searching much more effective.

Before assuming a file is lost, check common locations such as:

  • Documents

  • Downloads

  • Desktop

  • Pictures

  • OneDrive

  • USB drives

  • The Recycle Bin

8. Back Up Important Files

A backup is an extra copy of your important files stored somewhere other than the original location.

A computer can fail without warning. Files can also be lost because of accidental deletion, viruses, ransomware, theft, fire, flooding, or damage to the hard drive.

Important files may include:

  • Family pictures and videos

  • Tax and financial documents

  • Medical records

  • Legal documents

  • Business records

  • Schoolwork

  • Manuscripts and other writing

  • Password database files

You can back up files to:

  • An external hard drive

  • A USB flash drive

  • OneDrive or another cloud-storage service

  • A second computer

  • A network storage device

Do not keep your only backup connected to the computer all the time. Malware, electrical damage, or accidental deletion could affect both the computer and the connected backup drive.

For files that are extremely important, keep more than one backup in more than one location.

Develop a Simple File-Management Routine

Good file management does not need to be complicated.

Create clearly named folders, give your files meaningful names, and place them where they logically belong. Clean out unnecessary files occasionally, but do not delete anything unless you are certain you no longer need it.

Most importantly, back up your important files before something goes wrong—not afterward.

10 Basic Windows Skills Every Computer User Should Know

This is the first lesson in my series covering 50 useful Microsoft Windows skills every computer user should know.

You do not need to be a computer expert to use Windows effectively. Learning a few basic commands can save time, prevent frustration, and make everyday tasks much easier.

In the video that accompanies this post, I will demonstrate each skill step by step so you can see exactly how it works.

1. Copy and Paste

Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V

Copy and paste allows you to duplicate text, pictures, files, and other information without retyping or recreating it.

First, select the item you want to copy. Press Ctrl+C to copy it. Move to the location where you want the copy to appear and press Ctrl+V to paste it.

The original item remains in place while a copy is placed in the new location.

2. Cut and Paste

Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V

Cut and paste is similar to copy and paste, but instead of creating a duplicate, it moves the selected item from one location to another.

Select the text, file, or item you want to move and press Ctrl+X. Go to the new location and press Ctrl+V.

This is especially useful when moving files into different folders or rearranging text in a document.

3. Undo and Redo

Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y

Everyone makes mistakes. Fortunately, Windows gives you a quick way to reverse many of them.

Press Ctrl+Z to undo your most recent action. For example, you can restore text you accidentally deleted or move a file back to its previous location.

Press Ctrl+Y to redo an action you just undid.

These two shortcuts can save you from having to recreate work or start over.

4. Select All

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+A

The Select All command selects everything inside the active window or document.

For example, pressing Ctrl+A inside a Word document selects all the text. Pressing it inside a folder selects all the files in that folder.

After selecting everything, you can copy, move, delete, or format the selected items.

Be careful when deleting after using Select All. Make sure you really want to remove everything that has been selected.

5. Save a File

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+S

Saving protects the work you have already completed.

Press Ctrl+S regularly while working on a document, spreadsheet, presentation, or other file. This saves your latest changes to the current file.

Do not wait until you are finished before saving. Computers and programs can freeze, shut down, or lose power unexpectedly.

Saving your work frequently can prevent you from losing hours of effort.

6. Use Save As

The Save As command creates a new copy of a file with a different name, format, or storage location.

For example, you might have a document named:

Monthly Report

You can use Save As to create another version named:

Monthly Report – Final

The original file remains unchanged, while the new version is saved separately.

Save As is useful when creating templates, editing important documents, or keeping multiple versions of the same file.

7. Print a Document

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+P

Pressing Ctrl+P opens the Print window in most Windows programs.

Before clicking Print, check the following:

  • Make sure the correct printer is selected.

  • Confirm which pages will be printed.

  • Choose the number of copies.

  • Check whether the document will print in color or black and white.

  • Review the print preview.

Taking a few seconds to check these settings can prevent wasted paper, ink, and time.

8. Find Text in a Document or Webpage

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+F

The Find command helps you quickly locate a word, name, number, or phrase inside a document or webpage.

Press Ctrl+F and type what you are looking for. Windows or the program you are using will highlight matching results.

This is much faster than scrolling through a long document or webpage one line at a time.

9. Zoom In and Out

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl and the mouse wheel

Hold down the Ctrl key while moving the mouse wheel forward to zoom in. Move the wheel backward to zoom out.

This works in many web browsers, documents, email programs, and other Windows applications.

Zooming changes how large the information appears on your screen. It normally does not change the actual text size inside the document.

You can often return to the normal zoom level by pressing Ctrl+0.

10. Take a Screenshot

Keyboard shortcut: Windows key+Shift+S

A screenshot captures a picture of something displayed on your computer screen.

Press Windows key+Shift+S to open the Windows Snipping Tool. You can then select the portion of the screen you want to capture.

Screenshots are useful when:

  • Saving a confirmation number

  • Recording an error message

  • Asking someone for technical help

  • Creating instructions

  • Saving information that may disappear

  • Showing someone what you see on your screen

Remember that screenshots may contain personal information. Check the image carefully before emailing, posting, or sharing it.

Practice These Skills

The best way to remember these commands is to practice them.

Open a blank document and try copying, cutting, pasting, undoing, saving, searching, zooming, printing, and taking a screenshot.

You may not remember every keyboard shortcut immediately, and that is okay. The more often you use them, the more natural they will become.

How to Recover Old Software Without the Original Installer (Yes, It's Possible)

 

How to Recover an Old Software Program and Install It on a New Computer—Even Without the Original Installation Files

Have you ever bought a brand-new computer only to discover that your favorite software is trapped on your old one?

Maybe it's a program that's 10, 15, or even 20 years old. It still does everything you need, and you have absolutely no desire to spend hundreds of dollars upgrading to a newer version that doesn't really offer anything you need.

The installer is gone.

The company may no longer support it.

The download link disappeared years ago.

So, are you out of luck?

Not necessarily.

The Good News

In many cases, yes, it is possible to recover an older software program and get it running on a new computer—even if you no longer have the original installation files.

Notice I said possible, not guaranteed.

Every software package is different, but if certain conditions are met, you have a surprisingly good chance of bringing that old favorite back to life.

What You'll Need

The odds improve dramatically if you have:

  • Your old computer still working well enough to access the files.

  • Or a complete backup of your old computer.

  • A backup of your Windows Registry (RegEdit).

  • Your original software license key.

  • The Windows Installer (MSI) file that was used to install the program.

That last item—the MSI installation file—can be the most difficult piece of the puzzle.

In my case, I no longer had the original installer for an older program that I depended on. At first, it looked like I was out of options.

With a little persistence—and some help from ChatGPT—I was able to locate the hidden MSI installation package on my old computer. Once I found it, I finally had the missing piece needed to rebuild the installation correctly.

Why This Matters

There are thousands of people replacing perfectly good computers every day.

Many of them have one special application they absolutely love.

It might be an old accounting package.

A graphics program.

A genealogy application.

A mind mapping program.

Or some other piece of software that has faithfully served them for years.

If it still does everything you need, why spend money replacing it simply because you bought a new computer?

Sometimes you don't have to.

Two Lessons I Learned During My 25+ Years in IT

If there's one thing my career taught me, it's this:

1. Back Up Everything

Don't settle for a single backup.

Create multiple backups and store them in different locations.

External hard drives fail.

USB flash drives disappear.

Cloud accounts get locked.

Computers die without warning.

I've learned this lesson the hard way more than once.

Good backups aren't just convenient.

They're priceless.

2. Save Every Software License Key

Every time you purchase software, save the license key.

Store copies in multiple locations.

Print them.

Keep a digital copy.

Store an encrypted copy in a password manager.

Years later, you'll be thankful you did.

Without your original license key, recovering older software can become far more difficult—or impossible.

How to Start an IT Career With No Experience and No Degree

 

A practical 90-day path from complete beginner to credible IT job candidate

How do you get started in information technology when you have zero IT experience, no computer science degree, and nobody seems willing to give you a chance?

I know that question can feel impossible to answer because I once faced it myself.

Before I explain how I got started, I want you to understand what is possible.

At one point in my IT career, I was paid $85 an hour and earned approximately $163,000 that year. During one particularly busy year, a massive amount of overtime pushed my earnings to almost $250,000.

I am not telling you this to impress you.

I am telling you because I want you to understand how far an IT career can take someone who starts with nothing.

I did not have a computer science degree. My only college degree was a two-year degree in Health Sciences, which was completely unrelated to information technology.

I did not follow the traditional path into IT.

I created my own path.

The path into IT is not easy, but it is straightforward:

  1. Learn basic Linux, networking, and troubleshooting.

  2. Build a virtual home lab.

  3. Document what you build and repair.

  4. Find a way to gain genuine experience.

  5. Apply for jobs before you meet every listed requirement.

Let’s break down exactly how to do it.

The First Requirement Is Passion

The most important requirement for beginning an IT career is not a degree, certification, expensive computer, or personal connection.

It is passion.

At one point in my career, I was hired as a Communication Engineer, Advanced. The company offered me a salary considerably higher than the amount I had requested.

Later, I asked my manager a question out of curiosity.

“What made you decide to hire me?”

He looked directly into my eyes and gave me a one-word answer:

“Passion.”

He could tell that I did not simply want another paycheck. I was genuinely excited about the technology. I wanted to understand how everything worked, and I was willing to do the work required to learn it.

That enthusiasm came through during the interview.

Can You Make Yourself Passionate About IT?

You cannot force yourself to love something you hate.

You can, however, develop passion by discovering what technology can make possible—for companies, for other people, and for your own life.

Wanting an IT career is not the same as wishing you had one.

You must crave it enough to:

  • Study when you would rather watch television.

  • Practice after working your regular job.

  • Sacrifice some evenings and weekends.

  • Make mistakes and try again.

  • Ask questions when you feel embarrassed.

  • Take chances when success is not guaranteed.

  • Keep learning when the technology becomes frustrating.

Most importantly, you must believe that you are capable of learning the skills.

You do not have to know everything today.

You must believe that you can learn what you do not know.

As I explained in You Don’t Need a Computer Science Degree to Land a Great Technology Job, many employers will consider equivalent experience instead of requiring a four-year technology degree.

The challenge is finding a way to gain that experience.

How Do You Get Experience When You Have No Experience?

Nearly every IT job posting asks for some amount of experience.

Even positions described as entry level sometimes ask applicants to have one, three, or even five years of experience.

That creates the problem every beginner faces:

Nobody will hire me without experience, but how can I get experience if nobody will hire me?

The answer is that your experience does not have to begin with a high-paying, full-time IT position.

You can begin through:

  • A paid internship

  • An apprenticeship

  • Part-time technical work

  • An entry-level help desk position

  • Temporary or contract work

  • Volunteer work for a nonprofit organization

  • Technology support for a church or community organization

  • Helping a legitimate small business

  • Projects completed in your own home lab

Your first goal should not be finding the perfect job.

Your first goal should be finding an opportunity to work with real technology, solve real problems, and place credible experience on your résumé.

Find a Company Willing to Give You a Chance

Find a company that uses the type of technology you want to learn.

It does not have to be a large company. In fact, a small company may give you a better opportunity because you may be exposed to several different systems instead of being assigned one narrow task.

Look for paid internships and apprenticeships first.

Approach the company and explain what you have already been studying. Ask whether it offers:

  • Paid internships

  • Apprenticeships

  • Job-shadowing opportunities

  • Part-time technical work

  • Volunteer projects

  • Entry-level support positions

Do not simply say, “I want to work in IT.”

Explain what you have already learned and what you hope to learn next.

Wait—Did You Say Work for Free?

In some situations, a legitimate unpaid internship or volunteer arrangement may help you gain experience that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.

Do not automatically think of it as giving a company your labor for free. When the arrangement is legal and genuinely educational, you may be receiving valuable training and résumé experience at no cost.

You can think of it as the company giving you experience for free.

However, there is an important difference between an educational internship and a company using someone as an unpaid employee.

In the United States, the Department of Labor uses a “primary beneficiary” test when determining whether an unpaid intern at a for-profit business is legally considered an employee. Other countries have their own labor laws.

Make sure the arrangement:

  • Is legal where you live.

  • Is genuinely intended to teach you.

  • Has clear learning objectives.

  • Does not simply replace a paid employee.

  • Gives you meaningful exposure to technology.

Do not allow a business to take advantage of you indefinitely.

An internship does not have to be full time. A few evenings, one day a week, or several hours on weekends can gradually build meaningful experience.

Who knows? The company may decide that you are too valuable to lose and offer you a paid position.

That happens.

Do Not Approach a Company Knowing Absolutely Nothing

You will have a much better chance of obtaining an internship when you can show that you have already begun learning.

Do not walk into a company and say:

“I don’t know anything about computers, but will you teach me everything?”

Instead, be able to say something like:

“I have been studying Linux and basic networking. I built a small virtual lab, installed a Linux server, configured IP addresses, connected several virtual devices, and practiced troubleshooting connectivity problems. I would like an opportunity to continue learning in a real working environment.”

The words knowledge of Linux, networking, routers, switches, and troubleshooting can carry a lot of weight when you can support them with actual examples.

How do I know?

Because that is essentially how I got started.

Build Your Own IT Lab

Virtualization has made it easier and less expensive than ever to gain practical IT experience.

Virtualization allows you to run several simulated computers, servers, routers, switches, and operating systems inside one physical computer.

When I began, today’s virtualization tools were not available to me. I bought old, discarded computers and networking equipment on eBay and built a lab in my home.

Today, you can build a more capable lab without filling a room with used equipment.

You will need a reasonably capable computer. Ideally, it should have:

  • A modern Intel Core i5, Core i7, AMD Ryzen 5, or Ryzen 7 processor

  • At least 16GB of RAM

  • A solid-state drive

  • Enough free storage for several virtual machines

  • Virtualization enabled in the BIOS or UEFI settings

You may be able to begin with less, but additional memory will allow you to run more virtual machines at the same time. If you plan to build a serious lab, 32GB of RAM is even better.

Start With GNS3

GNS3 is a free, open-source network-emulation platform that allows you to design virtual networks and practice working with routers, switches, servers, firewalls, and other devices.

Visit the GNS3 website, watch the introductory videos, and read the installation documentation.

Do not become discouraged if the software looks complicated at first.

Trust me—you can figure it out.

Start small. You do not need to build a worldwide corporate network during your first afternoon.

Begin with two virtual computers connected to a simple virtual switch. Then add a router. Learn how to assign IP addresses and test communication between devices.

After that, create a second network and configure routing between the two networks.

Important Warning

GNS3 does not provide commercial Cisco operating-system images. You must supply legally obtained images yourself. GNS3’s official documentation tells users not to request or download unauthorized Cisco images.

Do not search questionable websites for copyrighted router and switch software.

Downloading software from an unknown website may expose your computer to:

  • Viruses

  • Trojans

  • Password-stealing malware

  • Ransomware

  • Licensing violations

  • Modified or corrupted software

Good antivirus protection is important, but antivirus software cannot make an illegal or untrustworthy download safe.

Another Excellent Option: Cisco Modeling Labs

Another excellent way to learn networking is Cisco Modeling Labs, commonly called CML.

Cisco Modeling Labs is the current replacement for the older product known as VIRL.

Cisco now offers CML-Free, a no-cost version designed for individual learners. It allows beginners to create labs using authorized Cisco and open-source reference platforms without searching unknown websites for questionable images.

Five nodes are enough to begin learning:

  • Routers

  • Switches

  • IP addressing

  • Routing

  • Connectivity testing

  • Network troubleshooting

GNS3 provides more flexibility and supports many different platforms. CML may be easier for someone who specifically wants to learn Cisco networking with authorized Cisco images.

Either one can help you build practical knowledge.

Install VirtualBox and Linux

Oracle VirtualBox allows you to create virtual computers inside your existing computer.

You can use it to install and operate Linux without removing Windows or making permanent changes to your physical computer.

A good Linux distribution for a beginner is Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is widely used, free to download, and supported by an enormous collection of tutorials and documentation.

Download Ubuntu only from the official Ubuntu website. Create an Ubuntu virtual machine in VirtualBox and begin learning how Linux works.

Practice tasks such as:

  • Installing and updating Ubuntu

  • Creating users and groups

  • Navigating directories

  • Creating, moving, and deleting files

  • Changing file permissions

  • Installing software

  • Checking network settings

  • Connecting remotely with SSH

  • Viewing system logs

  • Starting and stopping services

  • Troubleshooting a failed service

  • Configuring a basic web server

  • Backing up important files

After becoming comfortable with Ubuntu, you can explore an enterprise-oriented distribution such as CentOS Stream. CentOS Stream is the current CentOS distribution and should not be confused with the older CentOS Linux releases that are no longer maintained.

Do not follow a tutorial once and immediately declare that you know Linux.

Repeat the tasks until you understand what the commands do.

Then deliberately break something and figure out how to repair it.

That is how you learn troubleshooting.

Learn Basic Networking

Networking is involved in nearly every area of modern information technology.

You should understand at least the fundamentals of:

  • IP addresses

  • Subnet masks

  • Default gateways

  • DNS

  • DHCP

  • Routers

  • Switches

  • Network ports

  • TCP and UDP

  • Private and public IP addresses

  • Local and wide-area networks

  • Firewalls

  • Basic network security

You do not have to memorize an entire networking textbook before applying for an internship.

You should, however, be able to explain what happens when a computer attempts to communicate with another device.

You should also be able to perform basic troubleshooting.

For example:

  • Does the computer have a valid IP address?

  • Can it reach its default gateway?

  • Can it reach another device by IP address?

  • Can it resolve a hostname through DNS?

  • Is the problem affecting one computer or the entire network?

  • What changed immediately before the problem began?

Employers value people who can think logically and reduce a complicated problem into smaller possibilities.

Troubleshooting May Be Your Most Valuable Skill

Technology changes constantly.

The specific router, operating system, cloud service, or software program you learn today may eventually be replaced.

The ability to troubleshoot will always be valuable.

Good troubleshooters ask questions:

  • What is the exact problem?

  • When did it begin?

  • What changed?

  • What still works?

  • Can the problem be reproduced?

  • Is the failure limited to one device or user?

  • What evidence do the logs provide?

  • What is the simplest possible explanation?

  • How can I test that explanation?

Do not randomly change settings and hope the problem disappears.

Develop a theory, test it, record the result, and move to the next possibility.

That process is what separates someone who knows how to follow instructions from someone who can actually solve problems.

Document Everything You Build

A home lab becomes much more valuable when you document it.

For every project, record:

  1. What you were trying to accomplish

  2. What equipment or software you used

  3. How you designed the environment

  4. What problems you encountered

  5. How you diagnosed those problems

  6. What changes you made

  7. What you learned

  8. What you would do differently next time

Take screenshots and create simple network diagrams.

Remove passwords, public IP addresses, license keys, and other sensitive information before sharing anything online.

Your documentation can become:

  • A technical portfolio

  • A rĂ©sumĂ© accomplishment

  • A LinkedIn post

  • A GitHub project

  • An interview example

  • Evidence for a prospective internship supervisor

A hiring manager may not be impressed simply because you installed Linux by following a video.

The manager may be impressed when you can explain why the installation failed, how you diagnosed the failure, and what you changed to make it work.

Choose Skills Employers Are Actually Seeking

Do not choose your entire career based only on what you think is a fun/cool job.

You may want to become a game designer, but how many game-design jobs are available compared with positions involving networks, Linux, cloud computing, cybersecurity, technical support, or automation?

That does not mean you should never pursue game design.

It means you should investigate the job market before investing years in a skill.

Search current job openings in your area and in locations where you would be willing to work.

Record which technologies appear repeatedly.

Look for patterns.

You may repeatedly see skills such as:

  • Linux

  • Basic networking

  • Troubleshooting

  • Routers and switches

  • Windows administration

  • Cloud services

  • Cybersecurity

  • PowerShell

  • Python

  • Virtualization

  • Technical support

When thousands of applicants possess the same basic skills, an employer has thousands of choices.

When employers urgently need a skill that relatively few applicants possess, qualified people become much more valuable.

Go where the most fish are—not where you think you might catch the biggest fish someday.

Even though I am retired, I still receive requests to interview for technology jobs, often specifically because of my experience with Linux, networking, virtualization, troubleshooting, and enterprise systems.

Those skills continue to have value.

Turn Your Lab Experience Into Résumé Accomplishments

Do not simply write:

Knowledge of Linux.

Write:

Built and administered an Ubuntu virtual server, created user accounts and permissions, configured SSH access, installed services, and diagnosed network-connectivity failures.

Instead of:

Familiar with networking.

Write:

Created a virtual network lab using routers, switches, Linux servers, and multiple subnets; configured addressing and routing and documented troubleshooting procedures.

Instead of:

Worked as an IT intern.

Write:

Assisted with diagnosing Windows, printer, account-access, and network-connectivity problems for a small business.

Be truthful, specific, and prepared to discuss every statement during an interview.

Never claim knowledge or experience that you do not have.

You do not need to exaggerate what you have done when you can clearly explain what you learned.

Apply Before You Meet Every Requirement

A job description often represents the employer’s ideal candidate—not necessarily the only person the company will consider.

Do not reject yourself simply because a posting asks for three years of experience and you have one year of part-time experience supported by a serious home lab.

Apply honestly and explain what you have done.

An employer may value your:

  • Motivation

  • Home-lab projects

  • Internship experience

  • Troubleshooting ability

  • Communication skills

  • Willingness to learn

  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly

Once you have accumulated several months of genuine hands-on experience, begin applying for jobs related to the skills you have developed.

Do not wait until you feel completely ready.

You will probably never feel completely ready.

A Simple 90-Day Plan for Getting Started

Days 1–30: Learn the Foundations

Study:

  • Computer hardware

  • Windows basics

  • Linux fundamentals

  • IP addressing

  • DNS

  • DHCP

  • Routers and switches

  • Basic troubleshooting

Spend more time practicing than watching videos.

Watching someone else configure a router is not the same as configuring one yourself.

Days 31–60: Build and Document Your Lab

Install VirtualBox and Ubuntu.

Set up a Linux server.

Build a small virtual network in GNS3 or Cisco Modeling Labs.

Practice:

  • Creating users

  • Configuring IP addresses

  • Connecting devices

  • Testing network communication

  • Reading logs

  • Installing services

  • Diagnosing failures

  • Restoring a failed configuration

Document every project.

Days 61–90: Look for Real Experience

Contact:

  • Small businesses

  • Nonprofit organizations

  • Churches

  • Community groups

  • Schools

  • Local IT companies

  • Computer repair businesses

  • Managed service providers

Ask about:

  • Paid internships

  • Apprenticeships

  • Volunteer technology projects

  • Part-time work

  • Job shadowing

  • Entry-level support positions

At the same time, begin applying for jobs such as:

  • Help desk technician

  • Desktop support technician

  • Junior IT technician

  • Technical support specialist

  • Network operations center technician

  • Field service technician

  • Junior systems administrator

Your first IT job may not be your dream job.

It may be the door that eventually leads to it.

What You Should Have After 90 Days

After 90 days of serious effort, you should have:

  • A functioning virtual home lab

  • A Linux virtual machine

  • A basic virtual network

  • Several documented projects

  • Screenshots and network diagrams

  • A basic technical rĂ©sumĂ©

  • An updated LinkedIn profile

  • Enough practical knowledge to discuss your work during an interview

Will 90 days make you an expert?

No.

It can make you a credible beginner who has done more than simply say, “I want to work in IT.”

That alone can separate you from many other applicants. Can you really do this in 90 Days?  Absolutely, but only if you're willing to sacrafice and put in the effort.  If you currently don't have a job, treat this like your full time job.

Your First Job Is Only the Beginning

I did not begin my journey as an advanced communications engineer or enterprise systems architect.

I began by believing that I could learn.

I studied.

I experimented.

I built my own lab.

I made mistakes.

I took chances.

I gained experience wherever I could find it, and I kept building on what I had learned.

Eventually, companies were willing to pay me $85 an hour for the knowledge, experience, and problem-solving ability I had developed. During one overtime-heavy year, I earned almost $250,000.

Again, I do not say that to brag.

I say it because someone reading this may be sitting at home with no technology degree, no IT experience, and no idea how to begin.

I was once that person.

You do not need a computer science degree to land a great-paying technology job.

But you do need passion.

You need discipline.

You need curiosity.

You need hands-on practice.

You need the courage to ask someone for an opportunity.

Most of all, you need to believe that your life can become better—and then be willing to do the work required to change it.

You may have zero experience today.

That does not mean you must still have zero experience six months from now.

Once you have developed knowledge through your home lab, internship, volunteer work, or entry-level position, make sure you document it on your résumé and LinkedIn profile.

Don’t Click Yet: How to Handle Scary Pop-Ups, Fake Updates, and Internet Warnings

 

Updates, Pop-Ups, and Scary Messages: What to Click, What to Ignore, and When to Stop

Computers, smart phones, and the Internet are supposed to make life easier. But sometimes they do the opposite.

A message suddenly appears on your screen:

Your computer is infected.
Your phone has 13 viruses.
Your account will be deleted.
Your password has expired.
Click here to update now.
Call this number immediately.

For many people, that is enough to cause panic.

Scammers know this. That is why they use scary pop-ups, fake warnings, urgent messages, and confusing update notices. Their goal is not to help you. Their goal is to make you scared enough to click before you think. After you finish reading this post, read my other post about getting scammed.

This post explains the most common intimidating messages you may see on a computer, smart phone, tablet, email, website, or app — and what you should do before clicking anything.

The Most Important Rule

When a message scares you, slow down.

Scammers want you to act fast. They use words like:

  • Urgent
  • Warning
  • Final notice
  • Account suspended
  • Virus detected
  • Immediate action required
  • Your device is at risk
  • Payment failed
  • You have been hacked

A real company may warn you about something important, but legitimate companies usually do not demand that you panic, call a strange number, or give someone remote access to your device.

If a message makes you feel rushed, that is a warning sign.

Fake Virus Pop-Ups

One of the most common scams is the fake virus warning.

You may be browsing the Internet when a full-screen message appears saying your computer or phone is infected. It may include flashing colors, loud sounds, countdown timers, or a phone number to call.

It may say it is from Microsoft, Apple, Google, McAfee, Norton, or another trusted company.

Do not call the number.

Do not click the buttons.

Do not install anything from that pop-up.

Most of these messages are not coming from your computer’s antivirus program. They are just web pages designed to look scary.

What to do instead

Close the browser tab if you can.

If the page will not close, close the browser completely.

On Windows, you can press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager to close the browser.

On a phone, swipe up and close the browser app.

Then reopen the browser carefully. If it asks whether you want to restore the last session, choose No if possible.

Fake Update Messages

Updates are important. Windows updates, phone updates, browser updates, and app updates help fix bugs and security problems.

But fake update messages are also common.

A website may say:

Your browser is out of date. Click here to update.
Your video player needs an update.
Install this security update now.
Your phone needs a cleaner app.

Be careful. Real updates should usually come from the device itself, not from a random website.

Safer ways to update

For Windows, use Settings > Windows Update.

For Android phones, use Settings > Software Update or the Google Play Store.

For iPhones, use Settings > General > Software Update or the App Store.

For browsers like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, update from inside the browser’s own settings menu.

Do not install an update just because a website tells you to.

Browser Notification Pop-Ups

Sometimes a website asks for permission to send notifications.

The message may say:

Allow notifications to continue.
Click Allow to verify you are not a robot.
Click Allow to watch the video.
Click Allow to download your file.

This is often a trick.

If you click Allow, the website may start sending annoying or scary notifications to your computer or phone. These notifications may later claim you have viruses, missed deliveries, hacked accounts, or fake prize winnings.

In most cases, click Block or close the message.

A normal website does not need notification permission just to let you read an article, watch a video, or download a normal file.

“Your Account Is Locked” Messages

Another common scary message says your account has been locked or suspended.

This may appear in an email, text message, pop-up, or social media message.

It may claim to be from:

  • Facebook
  • Google
  • PayPal
  • Netflix
  • Amazon
  • Apple
  • Microsoft
  • Your bank
  • A delivery company

The message may say you must click a link to verify your account.

Do not click the link in the message.

Instead, open the app or website yourself. Type the address directly or use your saved bookmark. Log in normally and check your account from there.

If there really is a problem, you should see it inside your real account.

Password Expired or Login Warning Messages

A message saying your password expired can be real, especially at work or school. But scammers also use this trick.

They want you to enter your old password and new password into a fake page. Once you do that, they have your login information.

Before entering your password, ask yourself:

Is this the real website?
Did I open it myself, or did I click a link?
Does the address look correct?
Is the message using pressure or fear?
Is it asking for information it should not need?

When in doubt, do not use the link in the message. Go directly to the real website or app.

“Your Storage Is Full” Warnings

Storage warnings can be real. Phones, computers, Google accounts, iCloud accounts, and email accounts can run out of space.

But scammers use this too.

A fake message may say:

Your storage is full. Click here to clean your device.
Your phone is slow. Install this cleaner.
Your memory is infected. Remove junk now.

Be careful with “cleaner” apps. Some are unnecessary, and some are dangerous.

If your phone or computer says storage is full, check it from the device settings, not from a random pop-up.

Bank, Payment, and Delivery Scares

Some of the most dangerous scary messages involve money.

You may receive a text or email saying:

Your bank account has been frozen.
Your payment failed.
Your card was charged.
Your package cannot be delivered.
Customs fee required.
Your order will be canceled.

These messages are designed to make you click quickly.

Do not click the link. Do not enter your card number. Do not enter your banking password.

Open your banking app directly. Open the shopping app directly. Go to the official delivery company website yourself.

If the message is real, you should be able to confirm it without using the suspicious link.

“Someone Logged Into Your Account” Messages

This is another message that can be real or fake.

A real security alert may tell you someone tried to log into your account. That is important.

But scammers may send fake login alerts to trick you into clicking their link.

The safe method is simple:

Do not click the link in the message.

Open the real app or website yourself. Go to the security settings. Check recent logins. Change your password from inside the real account if needed.

Also turn on two-factor authentication when available. This makes it harder for someone to access your account even if they get your password.

Remote Access Scams

One of the biggest warning signs is when someone wants remote access to your computer or phone.

They may say they are from Microsoft, Apple, your bank, your Internet provider, or a security company.

They may ask you to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, UltraViewer, or another remote access app.

Be extremely careful.

Remote access lets another person control your device. They may be able to see your files, passwords, email, bank pages, and personal information.

Do not give remote access to someone who contacted you through a pop-up, phone call, text message, or suspicious email.

Scary Messages on Smart Phones

Phones are not immune from scams.

You may see fake warnings that say:

Your Android is infected.
Your iPhone has been hacked.
Battery damaged by viruses.
Click here to protect your phone.
Install this VPN now.
Your WhatsApp will be disabled.

Treat these the same way you would treat a scary computer pop-up.

Do not click. Do not install unknown apps. Do not enter passwords. Do not call strange numbers.

Close the page and check your phone settings or app store directly.

QR Code Scams

QR codes are convenient, but they can also be dangerous.

A QR code can send you to a fake website. This can happen on posters, parking meters, restaurant tables, emails, flyers, or payment signs.

Before entering personal information after scanning a QR code, check the website address carefully.

Be extra careful if the QR code asks for:

  • Bank information
  • Credit card details
  • Passwords
  • One-time codes
  • Personal identification
  • App downloads

A QR code is just a link. Treat it with the same caution as any other link.

Download Warnings

Sometimes your browser or computer warns you that a file may be dangerous.

Do not ignore that warning too quickly.

Be careful with files ending in:

  • .exe
  • .msi
  • .bat
  • .cmd
  • .scr
  • .zip
  • .rar
  • .apk

On Android phones, be especially careful with APK files downloaded outside the Google Play Store.

If you were not expecting the file, do not open it.

Camera and Microphone Permission Requests

Websites and apps may ask to use your camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, or files.

Sometimes this is normal. A video call app needs your camera and microphone. A map app may need your location.

But a random website should not need access to your camera, microphone, contacts, or files.

Before clicking Allow, ask yourself:

Does this app really need that permission?
Do I trust this company?
Was I expecting this request?
Can I use the app without granting permission?

When unsure, choose Deny.

What You Should Do When You See a Scary Message

Here is a simple process:

First, stop and do not click immediately.

Second, read the message carefully.

Third, look for pressure, threats, countdowns, strange grammar, or unusual links.

Fourth, close the message if it appears suspicious.

Fifth, go directly to the real app or website instead of using the link.

Sixth, ask someone you trust before entering passwords, payment details, or personal information.

A few extra minutes can prevent a serious problem.

What Not to Do

Do not call phone numbers from pop-up warnings.

Do not give remote access to strangers.

Do not enter passwords after clicking suspicious links.

Do not install software because a website scared you.

Do not pay money to remove a virus from a pop-up.

Do not give anyone your one-time security code.

Do not assume a message is real just because it uses a company logo.

Scammers copy logos all the time.

When the Warning Might Be Real

Not every warning is fake.

Your computer may really need updates. Your phone may really be low on storage. Your bank may really block suspicious activity. Your email provider may really warn you about a login attempt.

The key is how you respond.

A real warning should be checked through the official app, official website, or device settings — not through a scary pop-up or suspicious link.

Final Advice

The Internet is full of messages designed to make you afraid.

Some are real. Many are fake.

The safest habit is this:

Do not let fear control your clicking.

When a message says something terrible will happen unless you act immediately, slow down. Close the message. Open the real app or website yourself. Check from the source.

Scammers win when people panic.

You protect yourself when you pause.
